What you should stop doing immediately if charged with a crime in Indiana

This is the part that protects people from turning one case into two. Stop posting (or commenting) about the incident, anywhere. Don’t “explain your side” on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Threads, Reddit, group chats, anywhere. Don’t post subtweets, memes, “vague” statements, or “proof” you think helps you. Don’t post about drinking, drugs, weapons, or being “out of control." Why? Screenshots live forever, privacy settings fail, and context gets weaponized.

Stop talking about your case with anyone except your lawyer

That includes:

Friends/family who “just want to help;"

Coworkers;

The complainant or alleged victim;

Witnesses; or

Anyone you’re tempted to “coordinate stories” with.

Why? People repeat things. Phones get searched. Messages get subpoenaed. Even innocent conversations can look like witness tampering when taken out of context.

Stop contacting the complainant/alleged victim; directly or indirectly

No calls. No texts. No DMs. No “apology letters.” No “ask them to drop it.” No third-party “tell them I’m sorry.” Why? You could violate a court order (even accidentally). You could create new evidence against yourself.

You could make the complainant more motivated to pursue the case. If contact restrictions exist, the only safe path is through the court process with counsel.

Stop talking to police “to clear it up”

If law enforcement calls, shows up, or “just wants to get your side,” you can politely say:

“I’m represented (or I’m hiring counsel). I’m not making a statement.” Why? Even small details can become contradictions later. And statements are hard to undo.

Stop deleting messages, photos, or accounts

Do not “clean up” your phone. Why? Deleting can look like consciousness of guilt, and it can create separate legal problems. Preserve everything and let your lawyer advise you what matters.
