Timelines vary by county and courtroom, but Indiana cases usually follow a predictable structure: Initial hearing (first court appearance): the court informs you of the charge(s), addresses bond/conditions, and enters a preliminary not-guilty plea unless you enter a different plea. Indiana law also requires advisements about key deadlines (including how quickly you must retain counsel if you plan to hire). Pretrial conference: often the first working meeting where your attorney and the prosecutor discuss evidence, discovery status, and possible resolutions. Many counties set this soon after the initial hearing (and some set multiple pretrials). One Indiana county example explains that pretrial conferences may resolve a case or may be reset to allow more discovery exchange. Omnibus date / trial setting: Indiana sets an “omnibus date” to anchor deadlines. In felonies, the omnibus date is generally 45–75 days after the initial hearing. In misdemeanor-only cases, the omnibus date is usually 30–65 days after the initial hearing and is the trial date. Discovery and motions: evidence is exchanged, legal motions may be filed and heard, and negotiations may occur. Indiana’s rules set discovery timelines for both sides. Trial (if the case doesn’t resolve): the prosecutor must prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt. Immediately stop doing anything that creates new evidence or new legal exposure: Stop posting about your case (or the incident) on social media, in comments, or in group chats, even “vague” posts. Stop talking about the facts with friends, coworkers, or anyone who could be a witness. Stop contacting the complainant/alleged victim directly or indirectly (including “apologies” or messages through friends). If there is a no-contact order, contact can create serious consequences. Stop talking to police or investigators without your lawyer. “Clearing things up” often becomes evidence. Stop deleting texts, messages, photos, or accounts. Preserve everything and let your attorney advise you. Instead: save paperwork, write down your timeline privately for your attorney, follow bond conditions exactly, and get legal guidance as early as possible.
